Next Tuesday, May 21st we have some excellent topics on our Safe Routes to School Working Group meeting agenda! Agenda here. In addition to the usual Safe Routes updates from the City, guest speakers from Collins, Hyde and Stevens Creek will present the wonderful programs they’ve implemented at their schools.

Collins Elementary School will share their new No Stopping Zone policy, which solves the problem of afternoon street paralysis in front of the school. The school no longer has parents in cars waiting to pick up their child from school, blocking the road for 45 minutes, bringing the street to a standstill.

Hyde Middle School will share details about the student banner contest they just concluded, where students designed two great banners for their WOW days (Walk and roll on Wednesdays).

Stevens Creek Elementary School will share about their fabulous bike day, which included bike presentations for 3rd graders and a school-wide, after-school bike rodeo which incorporated many fun and helpful elements for young cyclists.

We’ll also be giving updates on infrastructure projects in the City, dates for our summer series of Middle School Bike Skills workshops, dates for next school year’s working group meetings, and our application for High School representatives to our Working Group. These will be available after the meeting.

Join us for the Working group meeting from 4-5pm in Conference Room C (downstairs) at Cupertino City Hall: 10300 Torre Avenue.

Also, work on McClellan Road’s separated bike lane project will begin next Monday, May 20. Cupertino’s separated bike lanes will physically separate cyclists from motor vehicles using posts and curbs, bringing an extra level of safety to Cupertino’s roadways. They’re aimed at creating a safer environment for our students, families and residents, particularly those who bike to work and school.

As listed in our May Safe Routes Newsletter, the City is holding a ceremony today from 1pm to 2pm in front of Lincoln Elementary School to kick off the project. Speakers will include representatives from the City of Cupertino, Cupertino Union School District, the Monta Vista High School community, Fremont Union High School District, and Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.

Feel free to join us for the ceremony today (park on Imperial Ave), or view it live at:  www.Facebook.com/CityofCupertino

Ride on!
