2019 in Review Thanks to the support of our Friends here are some highlights of progress made last year:
● The City of Mountain View has funded $600K of local seed money to apply for Measure B funding of $6M for detailed design to extend the trail southward from Dale/ Heatherstone Way to Remington Drive and Mountain View High School. The City of Sunnyvale has joined Mountain View in the project by matching the Mountain View funding. If the cities are successful in the VTA Measure B grant proposal, they will begin design and environmental studies.
● At the north end of the trail, Mountain View has funded the South Bay Salt Project and will start development soon. Part of this multi-year project is over a mile long extension of Stevens Creek Trail to the bay, ending with an observation deck.
● Mountain View, in cooperation with Google, has kicked off a project to close the short but annoying gap in the Permanente Creek Trail at Charleston Road. (Yes, we have taken Permanente Creek under our wing!) This project is expected to be completed sometime in 2020. The end result will be a signalized at-grade crossing of Charleston Road. The city has also funded the initial design and construction to connect the Permanente Creek Trail to the east end of Colony Street allowing for easier access to the trail.
● A Linda Vista Trail extension south from McClellan Road to Linda Vista Park, which will extend the Stevens Creek Trail, was approved by the Cupertino City Council. Subsequently, an important next step was taken when the Council approved a contract with the donor of the tract of land adjacent to Deep Cliff Golf Course.
● Unified signage for the trail may seem aspirational but some very significant steps have been taken. We have identified markers on the trail, to display newly designed medallions for clear trail identification. Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) and Santa Clara County Parks (SCCP) have viewed our recommendations and the initial responses have been favorable.
● We are leading a $180,000 fish passage project at Deep Cliff Golf Course to help restore steelhead trout migration in Stevens Creek. Valley Water, Deep Cliff Golf Course, the Friends, and Midpen together with Santa Clara County and the four cities of Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Cupertino and Los Altos have pledged financial support.
● We celebrated the 25th anniversary of our flagship event, the Trailblazer Race. With the help of our generous sponsors and over 800 participants we were able to celebrate a fun, family-friendly event while raising much needed funds.
● Ten habitat restoration and creek cleanup days were sponsored.
● Participation at over forty community festivals, business events, schools and collaborative nonprofits extended our education and outreach efforts for the community.
● Continued work and collaboration with OuterSpatial led to a more user-friendly, trail app for your iPhone or Android device.
● Finally, our website provides a wealth of information. While we continue to improve it, feel free to check it out (www.stevenscreektrail.org) and send us your feedback. 2020 looks to be another very busy year with many opportunities for trail extension and wildlife corridor protection. We hope we can count on your support.
